Nature as a Metaphor

Thriving In Winter

Hope Springs Eternal
March 28, 2018

This is my first post without the help of my web designers. I have no idea how it will look. I’m flying in blindly, and hoping for the best- like life in general, where leaps of faith are required almost constantly.

Here in the Northeast, we had a nice dose of Spring- like weather a few weeks ago. During our sunny-warm heat wave, I walked around my yard and saw some of my beloved plants already sprouting. What followed was close to 3 feet of snow on those little sprouts.

I always think of those earliest spring shoots as profoundly delicate, but are they really? Would they use their energy to sprout up, only to be destroyed by a final dose of Winter? Nature has an inherent wisdom, and so I have to believe that somewhere in their consciousness, those little sprouts know that they might be covered in snow. They sprout anyway, and they survive.

I’m always looking for the metaphors and the instruction in nature’s cycles. My life lately has felt a bit like those little sprouts covered in snow. Taking the leap of faith of a new business is like sending up a little sprout. Realizing all the work and responsibility, plus the added stressors of  daily life, is kind of like being dumped on by a snowstorm. It can be hard to hold on to those sprouts of new growth.

Based on years of gardening experience, I do know that when the snow finally melts, the sprouted leaves will grow into beautiful plants. I’m taking this metaphor and running with it. My life (and maybe yours too) might be a little bit like the month of March right now- new growth mixed with heavy cover, but I know that the snow will melt and the sprouts will grow on..
